Results- Group C
Venezuela def. Jamaica 1-0
Mexico def. Uruguay 3-1
Venezuela v Jamaica
Venezuela showed up. They out-possessed Jamaica 63-37, and completed 169 more passes than Jamaica (392-223). They have shown themselves as legitimate contenders, who may slip into second if they win against Uruguay, who lost to Mexico today. Jamaica, on the other hand, can say goodbye to the knockout rounds. They may even repeat their performance from last year's cup, and lose all three matches without scoring a single goal in the process.
Mexico v Uruguay
In terms of statistics, Mexico dominated today. Mexico out-possessed Uruguay 61-39, out-shot them 18-10, and out-passed them 378-208 (a difference of 170). However, despite these numbers, the match was tied 1-1 at the 84th minute, before Mexico scored through captain Marquez. Uruguay showed unbelievable heart and determination to keep fighting and not let the match slip away, despite only playing with 10 men. They had many great attacks, but they could not get by Mexico's defense, until a free kick set up Diego Godin's header equalizer in the 74th minute. Mexico have more or less clinched a spot in the knockout round at this point, as all they have to do is defeat Jamaica in their next match. Uruguay, on the other hand, has a crucial match against Venezuela up next. If Uruguay wins, they will probably finish second in the group, and advance to the knockout stage. But if they lose, they will most likely be going home early.
