Results- Group D
Panama def. Bolivia 2-1
Argentina def. Chile 2-1
Panama v Bolivia
Despite the fact that this match was their first ever Copa America appearance, Panama got a huge victory. Despite being out-possessed 54-46, Panama played a counter-attack style game, which created many chances for them. They had 15 shots, compared to 6 from Bolivia. However, they still are most likely going to finish 3rd in the group, as they will almost certainly be picked apart by both Argentina and Chile. As for Bolivia, they are more or less eliminated. To advance, they would have to beat BOTH Argentina and Chile, which is a laughable prospect.
Argentina v Chile
Argentina played very well. They shut Chile down, and won handily against the defending champions, even without Messi. Players such as Angel Di Maria, Gonzalo Higuain, and Ever Banega stepped up to help out their country. Argentina could have even won 2-0, but Chile scored a meaningless consolation goal in the dying moments of the game. Chile, however, didn't play terribly: they out-possessed Argentina 59-41, and had one more shot on target (6-5). However, the crucial difference was that Argentina made rapid counter-attacks and finished chances, whereas Chile could not finish (although due in part to some great saves by goalkeeper Sergio Romero). Argentina is more or less guaranteed to finish atop the group, unless they somehow lose to Panama or Bolivia. Chile, despite the loss, still has a strong chance to come second and advance to the knockout round, if they can beat Panama and Bolivia, which shouldn't be difficult.
